Abia On Alert After Kidnap Scare

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has confirmed two attempted kidnappings in Olokoro and Ubakala in Umuahia South Local Government Area, saying security agencies have brought the situation under control.

He disclosed this on Friday in Umuahia during his February media chat with journalists.

He said he had received a briefing from the Commissioner of Police and described the incidents as isolated cases involving men suspected to be cattle herders.

According to him, operatives of the Abia State Homeland Security intervened, forcing the suspects to flee, while steps have been taken to prevent a repeat.
Speaking on development projects, Otti said the Abia State Government owns 80 per cent of the Enyimba Hotel, with the remaining 20 per cent held by members of the Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.
He added that Radisson Blu has signed on to manage the rebuilt five-star facility, while the state may consider selling part of its stake to investors.
The governor also revealed plans to dredge the Aba River and develop a leisure centre around it, warning companies against dumping untreated waste into the waterway.
On the controversial airport project of the previous administration, he said investigations are ongoing and funds traced to private accounts.
