IPOB Challenges Govt Appeal For Kanu Release

The Indigenous People of Biafra has urged the Court of Appeal to reject the Federal Government’s cross-appeal in the case involving its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The group argued that the government’s legal filing supports its claim that parts of the trial court’s judgment lacked jurisdiction.

In a statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group maintained that a court cannot lawfully convict a person and then lack the authority to impose a sentence on the same charges.

It argued that any defect in jurisdiction would affect the entire sentencing process.

The organisation also challenged the government’s attempt to seek further action on sentencing while questioning aspects of the original judgment.

IPOB said the appeal court should dismiss the cross-appeal and uphold Kanu’s main appeal, which seeks to overturn the decision against him.

The group further claimed that the government’s legal move weakens its case and strengthens arguments for Kanu’s release.

It called on the appellate court to rule in favour of the IPOB leader and bring the long-running legal battle to a close.
