The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and several opposition parties have confirmed that they met the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) October 24 deadline to correct the omission of their candidates’ names from the commission’s published list.
The PDP’s National Organising Secretary, Captain Umar Bature (retd.), confirmed that the party completed the required corrections within the stipulated period.
The PDP’s governorship candidates in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu, and Gombe State, Professor Isa Pantami, were among those omitted from the list. Seven House of Assembly candidates were also reportedly affected.
Other parties affected by the omissions included the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Democratic Party (ADP) and Labour Party (LP).
INEC had given the affected parties until October 24 to address the omissions involving their candidates ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Bature confirmed that the PDP complied with the deadline, saying the party had completed the necessary corrections before it expired.
The NDC also confirmed that it met the commission’s deadline. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, affirmed that the required steps had been taken when asked about its compliance.
Similarly, the National Chairman of the ADP, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, confirmed that his party had met the deadline for correcting the affected candidates’ details.
The Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, also said the party remained in good standing with INEC regarding the correction of names and replacement of candidates.
Asogwa expressed confidence in the party’s preparations and said it was looking forward to a successful outing for its candidates in the forthcoming general elections.
Despite the assurances from the parties, INEC had yet to provide further clarification on the status of some omitted candidates, particularly NDC’s John Upan and ADC’s Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo in Cross River State.
Toyo told journalists that she had completed all the requirements communicated to her before the October 24 deadline but was still waiting for the commission to announce the outcome.
She said the deadline had expired on Saturday, October 24, and that she had fulfilled the necessary conditions, adding that she was waiting for INEC to provide an update.
The commission’s Head of Voter Education in Cross River State, Osaro Aisen, said the matter was being handled by the commission’s headquarters in Abuja because it involved legal issues.
Aisen declined to give a definite response on the affected candidates’ status, saying further information was expected from Abuja on Monday.
The status of the outstanding candidates therefore remained unclear as the affected parties awaited INEC’s official clarification.
