Severe Storms Flood Toronto, Leave Thousands Without Power

Severe storms have battered Toronto, flooding major roads and transport facilities, damaging a major stadium and leaving tens of thousands of residents without electricity.

The storms struck the Greater Toronto Area on Wednesday, bringing torrential rain, strong winds and large hail that caused widespread flooding and disruption across the city.

Flooding was reported at Union Station and several subway stations, while parts of the Don Valley Parkway and other major roads were submerged. Subway services were suspended on sections of the network during the afternoon rush hour.

Michael Garron Hospital also reported flooding in its emergency department, although the facility remained operational.

Rogers Stadium, a 50,000-capacity concert venue, suffered significant damage during the storm, with reports of damaged structures and coverings at the facility.

The storm also disrupted air travel, with several delays and cancellations reported at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Power outages were widespread. Toronto Hydro initially reported about 65,000 customers without electricity, while Hydro One said more than 40,000 customers remained offline across parts of Ontario on Thursday morning.

Toronto officials received roughly 1,000 storm-related service requests as crews worked to clear debris, fallen trees and damaged utility infrastructure.

The city said major roads were being reopened as floodwaters receded, while crews continued cleanup and safety operations.
