The Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to amend parts of its timetable for the 2027 general elections.

The ruling followed a suit filed by the Social Democratic Party challenging sections of the commission’s revised schedule.

Justice James Omotosho held that INEC has the constitutional power to issue and adjust election timetables, but ruled that such changes must strictly comply with the timelines stated in the Electoral Act 2026.

The court said the commission could not shorten deadlines already fixed by law.

The judge specifically faulted INEC’s revised dates for substitution of candidates and submission of party particulars, ruling that the commission exceeded its powers by reducing the period allowed under the Electoral Act.

The court then ordered the electoral body to review the timetable in line with the law.

The judgment adds to mounting legal pressure on INEC after another Federal High Court ruling recently nullified parts of its election guidelines.

The commission has already appealed that earlier decision and insists its timetable remains lawful and necessary for election planning.
