APC Congress Sparks Fresh Tensions In States

The All Progressives Congress held state congresses nationwide as part of preparations for its national convention later in March.

While many states reported calm exercises conducted through consensus, cracks widened in places like Ondo, Delta and Benue.

In several states, party leaders agreed on consensus lists to avoid open contests.

Governors and senior figures described the process as peaceful and urged members to close ranks ahead of the 2027 elections.

Some states, including Gombe, Edo, Imo and Kaduna, returned chairmen unopposed and praised the smooth conduct.

However, trouble brewed in Benue where rival camps loyal to Governor Hyacinth Alia and SGF George Akume organised parallel congresses and produced separate executives.

Both sides claimed legitimacy, deepening the internal divide despite peaceful gatherings.

Delta also recorded signs of discontent as some prominent figures stayed away from the congress, even though a new executive emerged by consensus.
