Abia Power Battle Gathers Pace Ahead of 2027

Key political figures in Abia State have begun moves aimed at unseating Governor Alex Otti in the 2027 general election.

Former governors Orji Uzor Kalu and Theodore Orji led the effort during a meeting held in Umuahia, drawing together past leaders of the state.
The gathering brought together politicians who held office in Abia between 2009 and 2023.

Kalu, who currently represents Abia North in the Senate, said the meeting was called to rebuild unity among former office holders and form a shared political direction.
The group, known among members as The Team, said it played a strong role in shaping the state during its years in power. Kalu argued that past administrations should not be dismissed and said leadership in Abia has moved in stages from one government to another.

The plan is to widen the group beyond its current members. A proposal was made to include all former political office holders from the period, including those who served in the National Assembly and the state legislature.
The motion, moved by former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly Chinedum Orji, was accepted by all present. The meeting ended with a resolve to work across party lines and stay focused on the 2027 contest.
