In Nigeria, the Okun Development Association has thrown its weight behind Joash Amupitan as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The group also urged Nigerians and political actors to remain calm amid growing debate over his appointment. It described the decision by Bola Tinubu as based on merit.
The endorsement comes at a time of heightened political tension.
The support was made public in a statement issued on Tuesday by its President-General, Akenson Rotimi. The association said the appointment reflects competence and integrity.
It added that Amupitan’s record in public service and academia shows discipline and respect for due process. The group expressed confidence in his ability to lead the electoral body fairly.
It also described the appointment as a source of pride for Okunland in Kogi State and for Nigerians who value capacity in leadership.
According to the group, Amupitan’s experience and character position him to strengthen trust in elections. It said his leadership could improve the credibility of the country’s electoral system.
While acknowledging public scrutiny, the association urged critics to follow legal channels in raising concerns.
It called for restraint in public discourse and asked Nigerians to allow the INEC chairman focus on his duties. The group reaffirmed its support for national unity and democratic stability.
