Adamawa Churches Shut Crossover Services Over Terror Threat

Churches across Adamawa State cancelled New Year crossover services on Tuesday after fresh security warnings pointed to a planned terror attack in Yola and surrounding areas.

The decision followed an alert issued by the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN in the state.
The warning came from Christian leaders under CAN, led by Rev Joel Danjuma Manzo, who said the advisory was based on intelligence reports received from security agencies. The alert affected churches and Christian groups preparing for crossover night gatherings.
The threat targets Yola and other parts of Adamawa, raising fears of attacks during large public and religious events linked to New Year celebrations. CAN said the plan was to strike during crossover services when crowds would be high.

According to the statement, the advice was issued after credible intelligence from the Department of State Services pointed to possible violence. Church leaders were told to immediately inform members and suspend night services to avoid loss of lives.
The move led to the cancellation of church programs across the state, with leaders stressing that safety must come before tradition. CAN said it was better to skip one crossover night than risk deadly consequences.
The tension also spread beyond churches as Governor Ahmadu Fintiri cancelled the state’s official New Year crossover event in Yola. Residents now brace for a quiet transition into the new year amid growing worries over insecurity in the state.
