2027: Wike Defends Tinubu’s Subsidy Removal

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the petrol subsidy, arguing that the decision demonstrated the courage needed to address Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Wike also urged Rivers State residents to support Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, saying the President deserved a second term for taking difficult economic decisions that previous administrations allegedly avoided.

The minister spoke at a Rainbow Coalition stakeholders’ town hall meeting in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he also sought support for candidates endorsed by the political alliance.

Acknowledging the economic hardship facing Nigerians, Wike argued that subsidy removal had increased revenue available to state and local governments, creating opportunities for improved governance and public service delivery.

He said Nigerians were experiencing difficulties but expressed confidence that conditions would improve, adding that the country’s situation before the current administration should also be considered when assessing its policies.

According to Wike, leadership requires the willingness to make difficult decisions in the national interest, even when they attract public criticism.

He maintained that the former subsidy regime placed considerable pressure on government finances and made it difficult to meet obligations to workers, pensioners and public institutions. He therefore urged Nigerians to be patient with the Tinubu administration, noting that the reforms had yet to resolve all the country’s economic problems.

The former Rivers State governor compared the reforms to infrastructure projects undertaken during his administration, particularly the construction of flyovers, which he said caused temporary disruptions to businesses and traffic but were intended to deliver long-term benefits.

He argued that leaders sometimes had to accept short-term inconveniences to achieve lasting development.

Wike also questioned the ability of opposition politicians to offer a credible alternative to the current administration, warning voters against entrusting the country’s future to individuals he described as political gamblers.

He said the town hall meeting was organised to educate residents about political developments and help them make informed decisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The minister blamed inadequate information and political propaganda for influencing some voting decisions during the 2023 elections, urging Rivers residents not to repeat what he described as past mistakes.

He also advised religious leaders against allowing political considerations to distract them from their spiritual responsibilities, arguing that politicians should take responsibility for explaining political issues to voters.

Describing Eleme as economically important to Nigeria, Wike urged residents to consider how their political choices could affect the area, Rivers State and the country as a whole.

Beyond advocating Tinubu’s re-election, the minister used the gathering to mobilise support for the Rainbow Coalition, an alliance involving members of different political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Identifying himself as a PDP national leader, Wike said members of the coalition had agreed to work together and support candidates contesting under the APC platform in the forthcoming elections.

He called on Rivers residents to support Tinubu and the alliance’s preferred candidates for governorship, legislative and other elective positions, arguing that cooperation would strengthen the state’s relationship with the Federal Government.

Wike said the coalition was established to promote peace, unity and development, stressing that political differences should not lead to violence or undermine governance.

He called for an end to political violence in Rivers State, noting that the APC and PDP, alongside other parties, had come together under the alliance to promote peace and development.

The minister also urged cooperation between the Federal Government, the Rivers State Government and elected representatives, saying collaboration was necessary to advance the state’s interests.

He concluded by urging Eleme residents to support the coalition’s candidates, maintaining that political stability and unity were essential for development.

Traditional rulers, religious leaders, women, youths, political leaders and representatives of parties participating in the Rainbow Coalition attended the meeting.
