The defection took place at Nike Lake Resort, where Abaribe appeared alongside Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, who also formally aligned with the ADC, strengthening the growing opposition coalition.
Abaribe said his decision followed his resignation from APGA earlier the same day, ending a brief stay in the party he joined in 2023 to contest the Abia South senatorial seat after leaving his former platform.

He explained that his move to the ADC was driven by loyalty to Peter Obi and a shared belief that Nigeria needs a new political direction built on unity and collective action.
According to the senator, the ADC is emerging as a rallying point for politicians and citizens who believe the country’s current challenges require a broad alliance rather than fragmented opposition efforts.
The development adds momentum to Obi’s call for opposition figures and movements across the country to come together under one platform, as preparations and realignments quietly begin ahead of future national contests.
