Lagos Nurses Raise Alarm Over Stagnation And Poor Welfare

In Lagos State, nurses working under the Primary Health Care Board are raising concerns over long-standing workplace challenges affecting their careers and daily duties.

The issues were made public on Wednesday by the Elegant Nurses Forum, which spoke on behalf of affected nurses across primary health centres in the state.
The group said many nurses have remained on the same grade levels for years, despite having the right qualifications, experience and length of service. According to the forum, some degree-holding nurses were never placed on their correct positions, even after an official circular approved proper placement for such staff.

The situation affects nurses under the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, while their counterparts under the Health Service Commission reportedly benefited from automatic promotions and placements. This gap, the forum said, has created frustration and a sense of unfair treatment among frontline health workers.
The nurses also pointed to a serious staff shortage across primary health centres, saying recent recruitment of fewer than 200 nurses was far from enough. As a result, many nurses are overworked, poorly paid and struggling with burnout while trying to meet the health needs of residents.

They further complained about poor working conditions, including rundown facilities, lack of basic equipment, weak security and unsafe environments. The forum warned that these conditions put both nurses and patients at risk and weaken the quality of care at the grassroots level.
To address the problems, the group called for immediate placement and promotion of qualified nurses, large-scale recruitment, better welfare and pay, and urgent repairs of health centres. The forum said it will continue to speak up until nurses under the Primary Health Care Board are treated fairly and given the support needed to deliver quality healthcare.
