Pensioners from Abia State parastatals have appealed to Governor Alex Otti to urgently pay their outstanding pension arrears, saying delays are worsening their suffering and leading to deaths.

The plea followed the reported death of five pensioners within two weeks, including retirees from the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State and the Abia Newspapers and Publishing Corporation.

The affected pensioners operate under a Joint Action Committee that represents retirees from several state agencies, including arts, housing, and urban development bodies across the state.

They said the unpaid 13 months of pension under the current administration have left many unable to afford medical care, settle rent, repay debts, or support their families.
According to the group, many retirees survived the long period without payment by borrowing money at high interest rates, a situation that deepened their hardship in the face of rising living costs.
While acknowledging efforts by the government to address gratuity payments, the pensioners urged the governor to clear the pension arrears quickly, warning that further delays could lead to more avoidable deaths despite their continued support for his administration.
