Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the killing of traders, including a pregnant woman, by a state-backed security outfit in Onitsha, Anambra State.

Obi described the attack as troubling and called for an immediate probe into the incident, stressing that those responsible must be held accountable. He noted that the development shows how some state-backed groups have become a source of fear rather than protection for citizens.

The former governor of Anambra urged that security agencies and community outfits be properly vetted, trained, and closely monitored to prevent abuses. He warned that without oversight, such organisations could easily become threats to the same people they were meant to protect.

Obi recalled a similar incident in which another local outfit, Udo Ga-Achi Security, was accused of brutalising a youth corps member, noting that the latest killings show a disturbing trend of lawlessness among such groups.
He stressed the need for reorganisation and strict accountability of all security outfits operating in the state, adding that only professionalism and adherence to the law can restore public trust.
Obi also expressed condolences to the families of the victims, praying for strength and comfort for them as they mourn.
