CSO Backs labour Congress In Natasha Senate Dispute

A civil society group, Gatekeepers of Democracy, has thrown its weight behind the Nigeria Labour Congress in the ongoing dispute involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate leadership.

The group said the NLC has every right to weigh in on political matters, especially when they affect workers and the wider national interest. It argued that separating economic rights from political rights would weaken both, stressing that labour has always been central to democratic struggles in Nigeria.

According to the group, attempts to restrict labour’s involvement to only industrial disputes would silence the voices of workers in governance and erode democratic accountability. It noted that suspending elected representatives goes beyond politics, touching directly on justice and fairness for citizens.

The organisation pointed to past labour interventions in areas such as pension reforms and welfare improvements as proof of its role in defending public interest. It urged the NLC to stay firm in demanding both better working conditions and stronger democratic values.

The clash between labour and the Senate leadership follows growing tension around the political situation of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central. Civil society groups, including Gatekeepers of Democracy, have vowed to keep pushing for the protection of democratic institutions.
