A leaked letter announcing Atiku Abubakar’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stirred political tension just days after Nigeria laid former President Muhammadu Buhari to rest.

The letter, dated July 14 and addressed to Atiku’s ward chairman in Adamawa State, was made public by his media aide. In it, the former vice president pointed to irreconcilable differences and disappointment with the direction the party has taken, saying it no longer aligns with its original values.

The timing of the leak drew criticism, with many questioning why such a political move was made public while the country was still mourning Buhari’s passing. Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, said the letter was not meant for immediate release and blamed the leak on internal sabotage. He alleged that certain figures within the PDP, in collaboration with members of the ruling APC, were responsible for making the document public to create chaos.

He also took aim at Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo for commenting on the issue, arguing that the minister should be more focused on solving problems in his sector than weighing in on political matters.
Ibe insisted that the focus should remain on national unity and reflection during a time of grief, rather than turning attention toward political drama. He described the leak as the work of those who oppose Atiku’s ambition and want to distract from more pressing national issues.
As of now, Atiku has not responded personally to the backlash, but the public release of the resignation letter has fueled fresh speculation about his next political move.
