He made this known in Abuja while speaking at a public event held to mark Tambuwal’s 60th birthday. Obasanjo explained that the PDP leadership had preferred Mulikat Akande-Adeola for the role, in line with the party’s zoning plan and its desire to promote women in leadership.
According to him, members of the House of Representatives rejected the party’s position and chose to exercise their independence by backing Tambuwal instead. Obasanjo said he respected their decision and stood with them when the final choice was made.

He added that Tambuwal’s calm nature and humility stood out during the tense period, noting that leadership without humility lacks depth. Obasanjo said those qualities helped strengthen confidence in Tambuwal’s leadership at the time.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who joined the event virtually, also spoke on the matter, saying lawmakers trusted Tambuwal deeply during his tenure as speaker, even when there were disagreements between the executive and the legislature. The event drew many top political figures from across the country.
