Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said he will not support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, warning that efforts to weaken the Peoples Democratic Party could harm Nigeria’s democracy.

He spoke during a media chat in Ibadan on Tuesday.
Makinde said his position is driven by concern for the country’s political balance, stressing that a strong opposition is vital for democracy to survive.

He revealed that at a past meeting attended by President Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Wike offered to hold the PDP for Tinubu ahead of 2027. Makinde said the comment shocked him, though he clarified that the president did not request such a move.
The governor said he regretted supporting Tinubu in the 2023 election, admitting that his decision did not bring the national reset he expected.

He said he believed Tinubu would form a government based on competence across party lines, but that expectation was not met.
Makinde also said Tinubu would not get his backing in 2027, adding that the survival of the PDP and Nigeria’s democracy must come first. He urged democrats to resist any attempt to destroy opposition parties.
Looking ahead, Makinde said he has the experience to serve Nigeria at the highest level if called upon. He pointed to his two terms as governor and his background in business, saying leadership experience at the state level prepares one for national responsibility.
