Drug Test Now Required for Federal Jobs

The Federal Government has approved compulsory drug tests for all Nigerians seeking jobs in the civil service under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The new rule applies to applicants across ministries, departments, agencies, extra-ministerial offices and parastatals, following a directive issued on Monday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The policy was introduced in response to growing drug abuse in the country, especially among young people, which the government believes is affecting productivity, safety and public service delivery.

Under the directive, permanent secretaries and heads of agencies must include drug screening as part of their recruitment process and work closely with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to conduct the tests properly.
The government said drug abuse now poses a serious risk to public health, workplace discipline and national security, making it necessary to screen those entering government service.
This decision follows similar steps already taken in universities and other sectors, showing a wider push by the government to curb drug use across the country and protect the quality of the national workforce.
