Tinubu Electric Bike Move Sparks Confusion In Borno

Residents of Borno State were left puzzled after President Bola Tinubu unveiled 3,000 electric motorcycles during a visit to the state despite a standing ban on motorcycles.
The development quickly stirred debate across Maiduguri and other areas.

The event took place on Saturday during the president’s official visit, where a large fleet of electric transport vehicles was presented to boost movement within the state. The rollout also included tricycles, cars and buses meant to improve public transport.
The confusion stems from an existing security order that bars the use of motorcycles in Borno. The restriction, announced earlier this year by security authorities, covers both electric and petrol-powered bikes due to safety concerns.
Security officials later confirmed that the restriction has not been lifted and remains fully enforced. Government sources also maintained that no new directive has been issued to change the policy.

Residents say the situation sends mixed signals, as many are unsure who the newly unveiled bikes are meant for or when they can legally be used. Some fear the bikes may remain unused while the ban continues.
Calls are now growing for the state government to clearly explain the plan behind the electric bikes and how they fit into the current security rules, as people seek clarity on what the move means for daily transport in Borno.
