The Sokoto State government has moved to correct reports suggesting Governor Ahmed Aliyu joined Abia State Governor Alex Otti during a visit to Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.

The clarification came after public debate grew around the high-profile visit.

The issue began when news circulated that both governors were present at the prison shortly after the court ruling that placed Kanu on a life sentence. The reports drew attention across the country and sparked questions about political involvement in the case.

According to the Sokoto government, Governor Aliyu was not in Nigeria during Otti’s stop in the state. Officials explained that the governor was performing the Lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia as of November 30, 2025, which was the period of Otti’s private visit.
Government records show that Otti was welcomed in Sokoto by commissioners and advisers who acted on protocol. He was later received at the Government House as part of the normal courtesies extended to visiting governors, a practice the state says reflects its culture of respect for guests.
The state government said the claims linking Aliyu to the visit were wrong and did not reflect what took place. It maintained that the governor could not have been part of any movement to the custodial centre while he was out of the country.
Officials added that Aliyu remains committed to lawful governance and to supporting peace in the state and the country at large. They noted that the governor continues to uphold respect for institutions and avoids actions that could stir controversy.
