The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said President Bola Tinubu approved lifetime salaries for retired Comptrollers-General and Deputy Comptrollers-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on Friday during the closing ceremony of the Specialised Border Control and Immigration Management System (BCIMS) training at the Immigration Headquarters in Abuja.
He also credited the Tinubu administration with clearing promotion backlogs across services under the Ministry of Interior, saying at least 50,000 personnel had received promotions within three years.
The minister said the government had increased recruitment, with no fewer than 40,000 personnel recruited in a single exercise. He also cited salary increases and adjustments to hazard and peculiar allowances as part of the administration’s efforts to improve staff welfare.
Tunji-Ojo praised Tinubu for addressing the welfare of serving and retired personnel, particularly the improved benefits for former heads of the Immigration Service.
He said retired Comptrollers-General previously received pensions of about ₦130,000, which he described as inadequate, before the President approved lifetime salaries for retired Comptrollers-General and Deputy Comptrollers-General.
The minister described Tinubu as a leader committed to improving the welfare of personnel across the services, adding that the President expected officers to perform their duties effectively and serve Nigerians better in return.
He also characterised the President’s policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda as long-term investments designed to strengthen national institutions beyond his tenure.
According to Tunji-Ojo, Tinubu’s approach focuses on laying foundations for future prosperity rather than pursuing only immediate gains. He added that the President recognised that while political officeholders eventually leave office, the institutions they build should endure and benefit future generations.
