Osun Parties Clash Over Supreme Court Ruling On LG Funds

The Osun APC and PDP have traded accusations after the Supreme Court dismissed the suit on withheld local government allocations, a decision that triggered fresh tension across the state.

The dispute began on Friday when the court struck out the case filed by the state’s Attorney General against the Federal Government. Six justices backed the lead judgment, while one delivered a dissenting view.

The situation escalated on Saturday when the APC reported that five of its members were attacked in Boluwaduro shortly after the ruling. The party claimed the assault was carried out by PDP-linked hoodlums and accused Governor Ademola Adeleke and PDP leaders of twisting the judgment to stir unrest. The APC said the public was being misled about the meaning of the verdict and warned that the situation could destabilize the state.

The PDP pushed back, insisting it was the APC that launched the attack. The party’s spokesperson said a PDP member was injured and that several of their supporters were detained after reporting the incident. The PDP described Boluwaduro as a long-standing flashpoint of APC-driven violence and said the ruling party had no interest in disorder.

The confusion deepened as both parties claimed to have been vindicated by the Supreme Court. The APC argued that the case was struck out for lack of merit and jurisdiction, while the PDP maintained that the judgment aligned with an earlier appellate ruling that upheld the February 2025 local government elections conducted under its watch.

The APC leadership alerted national security agencies, alleging that the state government was planning coordinated attacks across multiple councils. It said the violence in Boluwaduro was a test run for wider unrest and urged federal authorities to intervene before the situation worsened.

The PDP dismissed the allegation, saying the administration had consistently promoted peace. It argued that the court’s position validated the mandate of elected officials from the February poll and faulted APC leaders for misinterpreting the judgment to confuse residents.

The rival claims have left many residents unsure of the true implications of the Supreme Court decision, while security agencies continue efforts to restore calm in the affected areas.
