The Federal Capital Territory Administration has suspended the Mandate Secretary for Education, Danlami Hayyo, after a memo announcing the shutdown of all public schools in Abuja circulated without approval.

The FCTA said on Tuesday that the notice was never authorised by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, describing the announcement as false and capable of causing panic among parents and students. The statement was issued by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Adviser on Public Communications and Social Media to the minister.

According to the administration, the Acting Head of Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, has also been directed to take disciplinary action against the Director of School Services, Aishatu Sani Alhassan, who issued the circular in breach of civil service rules.

The FCTA urged the public to dismiss the rumoured school closure, insisting that the academic calendar remains unchanged and no shutdown was approved. It added that adequate security measures are in place across the territory, including the renewed deployment of Operation Sweep and other safety initiatives.
The controversy comes at a time of heightened concern following multiple school abductions in northern states, including Kebbi, Niger and Kwara. On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu welcomed the release of 24 schoolgirls kidnapped in Maga, Kebbi State, and directed security agencies to intensify efforts to free others still held by terrorists.
