The decision followed internal consultations aimed at strengthening the party’s chances ahead of the poll.
Party sources said several options from the South-East and South-West were considered before leaders settled on Amaechi.
They believe his political experience, nationwide contacts and influence from his years as Rivers State governor and cabinet minister could help expand support for the ticket.
According to insiders, the party concluded that a South-East candidate would offer little electoral advantage because Peter Obi is already contesting from the region under a different platform.
Attention then shifted to the South-South, where Amaechi was seen as a figure capable of attracting support across multiple regions.
The ADC is also said to be working towards greater unity within its ranks after lessons from previous opposition alliances.
Party leaders reportedly see Amaechi’s political profile, including his past leadership roles and involvement in major infrastructure projects, as assets that could boost the campaign ahead of the 2027 election.
