Fubara explained that his withdrawal followed consultations with family members, friends and political associates.

He stated that personal ambition should not come before the stability and progress of the state, adding that he would support whoever emerges as the APC candidate.

The governor also thanked his supporters for standing by him throughout the political process.

He admitted that many people would feel disappointed by his decision but maintained that his actions were guided by the larger interest of Rivers State and the need to avoid further political tension.

His withdrawal comes amid the prolonged political crisis between him and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The APC recently screened Fubara and other aspirants for the governorship primary, while several of his allies were reportedly disqualified from state assembly contests.
