The Federal Government and Lagos State Government have set up joint committees to implement measures aimed at achieving 24-hour electricity supply in Lagos, with the state expected to serve as a pilot for similar interventions in other major energy corridors.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the initiative formed part of the Federal Government’s strategy to prioritise three major energy corridors: Lagos, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, and Enugu-Port Harcourt.

According to Tegbe, the Lagos axis accounts for about 40 to 50 per cent of Nigeria’s electricity demand, making it a major focus of efforts to improve power supply and eventually achieve 24-hour electricity across the country.

He said the retreat examined the market structure, regulatory framework, technical requirements and operational challenges affecting electricity supply, with solutions planned for the immediate, medium and long terms.

Tegbe announced the formation of a Joint Technical Working Committee to coordinate the interventions. The committee will be co-chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and the Managing Director of the Lagos State Independent System Operator.

Representatives of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Rural Electrification Agency, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Federal Ministry of Power, Lagos State Independent System Operator and Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission are expected to serve on the committee.

The minister also announced a Steering Committee to supervise the implementation of the agreed measures. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will chair the committee, while Tegbe will serve as co-chairman.

Other members will include the Special Adviser on Power, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Power and the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye.

Tegbe said the committees would work towards delivering improved electricity to consumers in the selected energy corridors, beginning with Lagos before extending the approach to Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt.

Sanwo-Olu described the meeting as productive, saying it brought together senior officials from the Federal Government and Lagos State to examine the challenges affecting electricity supply.

The governor said the discussions were frank and produced several immediate measures that could improve power supply in the state. He expressed confidence that the newly established Steering Committee would speed up implementation.

Sanwo-Olu said the initiative represented the beginning of efforts to realise President Bola Tinubu’s objective of providing 24-hour electricity supply, adding that the experience gained from Lagos could be applied to other parts of the country.
