Atiku Abubakar has indicated that the 2027 election could mark his last attempt at Nigeria’s presidency, pointing to his age and the growing weight of the contest.

He made the remark during a television interview in Abuja as political discussions ahead of the next election gather pace.

He said the stakes would be higher by then and suggested he may not seek the office again after that race.

Atiku has been a regular contender since returning to active politics, beginning with his role in the 1993 primaries under the Social Democratic Party Nigeria, where he stepped aside for Moshood Abiola.

He later ran under different platforms but fell short in each attempt.


His past bids include contests against Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2007, Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, and Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023.

As talks around 2027 build, his latest stance adds to the unfolding political landscape.
