In Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory Administration has teamed up with the Japan International Cooperation Agency to upgrade the city’s long-standing master plan, originally designed in 1979.

The agreement was discussed during a high-level meeting involving FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Japanese officials in Abuja.
Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation, with technical teams already working on updating the plan.
The upgrade aims to align Abuja’s development with future needs up to 2050, focusing on infrastructure expansion, economic growth, and better urban planning.
Officials say the review will also address issues like population growth, land use, and city management.
Japanese experts, working with local authorities, are expected to drive the process through dedicated technical groups. The goal is to create a more organised, modern, and livable capital city.
Beyond the master plan, both Nigeria and Japan are also exploring stronger collaboration in areas like agriculture, education, and infrastructure development within the FCT.
