The Independent National Electoral Commission has declined a request by the Labour Party’s caretaker leadership to dissolve state executive committees set up by former National Chairman Julius Abure.

The decision followed a notification sent by the caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman, informing the commission that the party had replaced executives across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory with interim leaders.

The letter, signed by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, stated that the commission could not approve the move made by the party’s National Executive Council under those conditions.

Responding to the development, Usman dismissed the memo, describing it as an outdated document.

She said the concerns raised by the commission had already been addressed by the party’s national leadership and urged the public to ignore renewed attention to the letter.

The situation adds another twist to the long-running leadership dispute within the Labour Party that began after the 2023 general elections.
