A UK-based Nigerian footballer, Saburi Olayinka Adeniji, has died after suffering a severe brain injury, leaving the non-league football scene in England in mourning.

The winger, who played for Kings Park Rangers Football Club in Essex, passed away in hospital on Friday.

Adeniji died at Queen’s Hospital just one day before his wife and four-year-old daughter arrived from Nigeria to see him.

He had been on life support in the Critical Care Unit since January 15 after being admitted with a serious brain stem injury, with doctors delaying withdrawal of support in hopes his family would arrive in time.
The club confirmed his death in an emotional statement, saying, “It is with great sadness that we must announce our number 17 Saburi Adeniji ‘Ola’ passed away yesterday morning.”
It added, “He fought so hard to still be here for when his family arrived. His wife and daughter unfortunately arrived this morning, a day late.”
Kings Park Rangers and the wider football community rallied around Adeniji and his family, suspending matchday gate fees, holding a minute’s silence, and organising fundraising efforts.
A public appeal has raised over £16,000 to support his wife and daughter with travel, accommodation, and long-term care, describing him as a devoted father determined to secure a better future for his child.
