Nigeria’s two main labour centres have issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over the delayed review of health workers’ salaries, warning that failure to act could lead to a nationwide strike.

The Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress made the announcement on Friday, directing the Ministry of Health and related agencies to immediately implement the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure, a report completed and submitted since 2021.

Labour leaders said health workers have endured years of hardship due to the government’s refusal to act on the recommendations, despite similar salary adjustments being approved for other categories of health professionals within the same sector.

They argued that repeated dialogue and restraint by organised labour had been met with silence and excuses, describing the situation as unfair treatment that has deepened frustration among health workers across the country.

The unions stated that the ultimatum takes effect from January 23, 2026, and warned that if the issue is not resolved within the deadline, workers nationwide would be mobilised for coordinated industrial action, including protests, picketing and a withdrawal of services, placing full responsibility on the government for any disruption.
