The decision came after geological surveys and assessments indicated commercially viable oil deposits in parts of the state.

Federal authorities confirmed that the approval is meant to attract investment and boost domestic oil production outside the traditional Niger Delta region.

Under the plan, oil companies with the required licences and technical capacity will be invited to explore and extract crude in designated blocks within Ogun State.

Government officials say this move could diversify local economies and create jobs in host communities.

Ogun State leaders welcomed the announcement, noting that the development could bring infrastructure, revenue and new opportunities for residents.

They also stressed the need for strong environmental protections and community engagement as drilling begins.

The approval aligns with broader national efforts to increase oil output, reduce fuel imports and expand Nigeria’s energy footprint. Observers say successful implementation could signal a shift in where and how the country produces oil.
