Al Mustapha Reflects After Legal Battle

Major Hamza Al-Mustapha has spoken publicly after the Supreme Court ended the long-running case over the killing of Kudirat Abiola, saying the ruling has finally cleared his name.

The former chief security officer to late military ruler Sani Abacha reacted days after the apex court struck out the charge on 22 January, bringing a legal battle that stretched nearly three decades to an end across three levels of court in Lagos and Abuja.

Al-Mustapha said the judgment closed a painful chapter that began in 1998 with his arrest and prosecution, describing the years that followed as deeply distressing for him and his family. He said he held no bitterness toward individuals or institutions involved in the case.

He praised the Federal Government for allowing the courts to handle the matter without interference and commended the judiciary for what he described as a careful and fair process that ran its course to the highest court.

The retired military officer also thanked his family, legal team and Nigerians who supported him during the trial, noting that many close relatives endured harassment and hardship throughout the years of litigation.

Looking ahead, Al-Mustapha said he was ready to move on with his life and contribute to the country’s progress, urging Nigerians to reject bitterness and work together in unity for a better future.
