Schoolchildren taken from St Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State have regained their freedom after weeks in captivity.

The 130 pupils were released on Friday in an area linking Agwara and Borgu local government areas, bringing relief to families and the wider community after a long wait.
Gunmen had stormed the school on November 21, arriving on motorbikes and spending about three hours during the raid. They abducted 315 people, made up of 303 students and 12 teachers, before disappearing into nearby forests.
Within the first day, 50 pupils managed to escape on their own. This left 265 people, including all the teachers, still held by the attackers.

On December 7, security efforts led to the release of 100 students. The operation involved stronger military action, air patrols across Niger, Kwara and Kebbi states, and support from local hunters familiar with the terrain.
The final release followed sustained pressure from security forces and government authorities. The incident had earlier forced the closure of schools in Niger State and some federal institutions in risky areas as steps were taken to protect students and restore safety.
