Petrol station workers across Nigeria are pressing the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria to provide health insurance for staff in the downstream oil sector, following a new welfare move by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

The demand was raised by the Concerned Petrol Station Workers after NNPCL rolled out health insurance for employees in its retail outlets nationwide, a step labour groups say should not be limited to government-owned stations alone.
The call came from Kaduna, where the group’s convener, Ibrahim Zango, said workers under independent marketers face the same daily dangers as those in NNPCL outlets and deserve equal protection.

Petrol station staff, including pump attendants, cleaners, security guards and managers, are exposed to fuel fumes, fire risks and long working hours, making access to proper healthcare vital for their safety and survival.
The group warned that rising healthcare costs and harsh economic conditions have left many workers vulnerable, as a single illness can erase months of earnings for low-paid staff.
They urged IPMAN to act quickly, saying health insurance is a basic worker need that would protect lives, boost morale and help keep the petroleum retail sector stable and productive nationwide.
