Benue Rejects Northern Security Fund

A senior Peoples Democratic Party leader in Benue State, Bemgba Iortyom, has criticised the Northern security arrangement that groups 19 states into a joint security framework.

The plan requires each participating state to contribute N1 billion monthly to a regional fund aimed at supporting intelligence, logistics, technology, and community policing across the North.

Iortyom said the arrangement does not match Benue’s specific security needs and that the state would benefit more from internally managed solutions. He argued that investments should focus on community policing, local government security responses, and better coordination with federal security agencies to address the unique challenges facing rural communities.

He also raised concerns about the proposed creation of state police across the North. Iortyom said the initiative must have clear legal and administrative structures to ensure accountability and professionalism, warning that a rushed rollout could create more problems than it solves.

Regarding the planned six-month suspension of mining activities, Iortyom suggested that Benue strengthen its internal oversight instead of relying solely on regional directives. He stressed that a coordinated approach involving state institutions and local communities would better protect the solid minerals sector while addressing local security risks.

The PDP leader questioned the governance of the Northern Security Trust Fund, insisting that citizens need assurance that their contributions would produce direct security improvements for Benue. He called for transparent structures and measurable outcomes before committing resources to the regional plan.

Iortyom concluded that Benue’s security strategies must reflect the state’s realities and that any regional initiative should not override the long-term welfare of its people. He urged local leaders and stakeholders to carefully scrutinise the arrangement to ensure that state resources serve the immediate needs of citizens.
