Wike Moves Against Abuja Land Grab

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the arrest of a property developer and the demolition of buildings constructed on land reserved for foreign embassies in Katampe Extension, Abuja.

The land, located in the diplomatic zone of the Federal Capital Territory, was originally allocated on March 18, 2008, to several foreign missions for diplomatic residential use, while part of it was also set aside for a power station project.
Authorities discovered the illegal development during an inspection of projects across Abuja.

According to the minister, an individual took control of the plots and began construction without approval from the Federal Capital Development Authority.
He said the Department of Development Control had been instructed to remove the structures and reclaim the land for its intended use.
The affected plots were previously assigned to diplomatic missions including Thailand, Bulgaria, Syria, Somalia, Serbia and Montenegro, Japan, Austria, Switzerland, Senegal and the Palestine Liberation Organization.
The FCT Administration has begun contacting the embassies so they can take possession of their land.
Wike confirmed that the suspected developer, Alhaji Kabiru Sahara, has been arrested and will face prosecution after ongoing police investigations.
