Tinubu Seeks ECOWAS Protection For Guinea-Bissau Opposition Leader

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the ECOWAS Commission to provide security support for Guinea-Bissau opposition leader Fernando Dia Da Costa, following reported threats to his life.

In a letter dated 30 November 2025, Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar said Tinubu approved shelter and protection for Da Costa at the Nigerian Embassy in Guinea-Bissau. Da Costa was a presidential candidate in the country’s 23 November election.

Tuggar said the move was a preventive step to ensure Da Costa’s safety and reflects Nigeria’s commitment to defending democratic processes in the region. He also asked ECOWAS to direct its Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau to offer additional security.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry, through its media aide Alkasim Abdulkadir, confirmed that granting Da Costa protection aligns with Nigeria’s responsibility to promote peace and stability in West Africa. Abdulkadir said the decision was aimed at reducing tensions and supporting regional cohesion.
