Dangote Truck kills Eight In Ondo Including Pregnant Woman And Child

Tragedy struck on Wednesday evening in Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, when a Dangote truck carrying cement lost control and crashed into roadside shops, killing at least eight people, including a pregnant woman and a child.

The accident occurred near the Holy Trinity Church along the busy Owo–Akungba–Ikare expressway, throwing the town into confusion as residents and students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), rushed to the scene.

According to reports, the truck, loaded with cement, suffered a brake failure before running into a barricade in front of the university and veering off the road into several shops.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State, Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed the crash, stating that five men, two women, and a young boy lost their lives in the incident.

“The truck ran into a barricade and lost control, leading to the accident. Eight people were confirmed dead,” Ibitoye said. He urged drivers to maintain their vehicles properly and obey traffic regulations to avoid similar disasters.

The crash sparked outrage among students and residents, who accused authorities of neglecting repeated calls to restrict heavy-duty vehicles from using the Akungba route.

The Students’ Union Government of AAUA expressed grief over the loss, describing the crash as devastating and avoidable. Its spokesperson, Akinibobola Ajidagba, said the union had long demanded a ban on trucks along the university’s main road to prevent tragedies like this.

“We have been warning about the dangers of allowing articulated vehicles to pass through Akungba. Sadly, our fears have again come true,” he said.

Ajidagba urged students to remain calm and stay off the highway while authorities take steps to ensure safety around the campus.

This latest crash has reignited calls for stronger traffic control and alternative routes for heavy trucks passing through university communities in the state.
