Nigeria To Shut Niger Republic Border In Jigawa Ahead Of By Election

Authorities in Jigawa State will temporarily close the border with Niger Republic as part of heightened security measures for Saturday’s by election in Garki/Babura Federal Constituency.

The decision, reached during a meeting between the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agency heads in Dutse, is aimed at preventing cross border interference and ensuring a peaceful poll.

State Commissioner of Police Dahiru Muhammad said all security agencies will carry out a two day show of force in Garki and Babura from Thursday to Friday. The border will be shut from 12am on Friday until 6pm on election day.

Muhammad explained that the restriction is to protect the electoral process and prevent external influence. A three tier security arrangement will be in place around polling units, supported by a central security situation room in Babura.

An emergency hotline will be available for incident reporting, while strategic locations will receive maximum security coverage.

The police chief assured residents that all arrangements have been made for a safe election and urged voters to turn out in large numbers. Security agencies have pledged joint operations to maintain order throughout the exercise.
