Former Kogi West senator Dino Melaye has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, ending a long period of silence following his suspension by the party last year.

Melaye made his exit public on Thursday through a resignation letter posted on his official X account. The letter was addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

His decision comes more than 10 months after PDP leaders in his ward expelled him for allegedly engaging in anti-party activities. The ward executives had in September 2024 accused him of ignoring a disciplinary summons and said his conduct had embarrassed the party.

Although Melaye has not declared a new political affiliation, he was seen at the inaugural meeting of the African Democratic Party, fuelling speculation that he may be joining the emerging coalition.

In his letter, Melaye criticised the PDP for what he described as a lack of capacity to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges. He said the party had lost direction and that he could no longer support its agenda in good conscience.

He formally requested that his resignation be taken as a complete withdrawal from all levels of the party.

Melaye, who ran for governor under the PDP in the 2023 Kogi State election, ended the letter by thanking the party for the platform it once gave him to serve.
