#EndSARS: Family, Friends of murdered soldier accuse Imo Govt of neglect, cover-up

Family and friends of Sgt Peka Joel Onyema, who was murdered in Owerri on October 21, 2020, are calling out the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodima, accusing him of neglect and cover up.

Sgt. Peka Joel Onyema, was serving at the 33 Artillery Brigade in Obinze Owerri, Imo State, until he met his untimely death.

He was murdered alongside Cpl. Clerks Oyikepreye, an indigene Bayelsa State.

WazobiaReporters learnt that on October 21, 2020, during the EndSARS protest, Sgt. Peka Joel Onyema, and four of his colleagues were deployed to Ubommiri in Mbaitoli Local Government, Imo State.

“As Sgt. Onyema and his other colleagues were going to where they were deployed to, they met some hoodlums.

“The hoodlums were coming towards them, pretending to be protesters and my brother being the only Igbo man among the soldiers decided to calm them down.

“While addressing the hoodlums, they descended on him and axed him to death, took his rifle and killed one other of his colleagues while the other three soldiers ran for their lives.

“Since then, we have not heard anything from the Imo State government.

“Painfully too, we learn from the Army that the State Governor is blocking them from making arrest for reasons best known to him.

“Most importantly, many Nigerians do not know that something like this happened in Imo State and we wonder why the government has not even reached out to the family,” a family member said.
