Their plan centres on a one-term arrangement aimed at gaining backing from key northern figures. The move is also seen as an attempt to weaken the influence of Atiku Abubakar within the party.

Sources say the duo have been meeting stakeholders and traditional leaders to promote a power rotation deal.

The proposal seeks to convince northern leaders to support a southern candidate for a single term. Obi is being positioned for that role if the plan succeeds.

The consultations are ongoing despite the party’s leadership dispute, which is still awaiting a ruling from the Supreme Court of Nigeria. At the same time, aspirants within the party continue to mobilise support and form alliances ahead of the primaries.

A new group backing the joint ticket has already been launched.
Within the party, resistance to Atiku is said to be growing as more alliances form.

However, insiders note that he still holds strong influence within the party structure.

With talks intensifying, the coming weeks are expected to shape how the opposition aligns for the 2027 election.
