President Muhammadu Buhari has responded to the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi and others, who have called for the restructuring of Nigeria in the last seven days, saying he will not succumb to ‘threats and undue pressure’ to restructure the country.

He described their advice as “unpatriotic outburst” which is “both unhelpful and unwarranted.”

WazobiaReporters had reported that Adeboye, at a symposium organized to celebrate Nigeria’s independence advised the government to restructure the country by adopting a combination of the British and American system of government or risk a break-up of the country.

Adeboye said: “Why can’t we have a system of government that is 100 per cent Nigerian, unique to us? For example, we started on with the British system of government, somewhere along the line, we moved over to the American system of government.

Also, Fayemi, in an interactive session with a select group of Journalists in Lagos, said time had come for Nigerians to confront the reality of restructuring the country, adding that it was time to figure out a structure that is more responsive to the yearnings of the population, cautioning that the Nigerian federation is currently not working.
Responding, President Buhari, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said he will not take any decision against the interest of 200 million Nigerians out of fear or threats.
The statement reads: “This is to warn that such unpatriotic outbursts are both unhelpful and unwarranted as this government will not succumb to threats and take any decision out of pressure at a time when the nation’s full attention is needed to deal with the security challenges facing it at a time of the Covid-19 health crisis.
“Repeat: This administration will not take any decision against the interests of 200 million Nigerians, who are the President’s first responsibility under the constitution, out of fear or threats especially in this hour of health crisis.
“The President as an elected leader under this constitution will continue to work with patriotic Nigerians, through and in line with the Parliamentary processes to finding solutions to structural and other impediments to the growth and wellbeing of the nation and its people.”
