Former Niger State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Jonathan Vatsa, has been appointed spokesperson and Director of Contacts and Mobilisation for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship campaign council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appointment comes barely 48 hours after Vatsa left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the SDP alongside more than 200 supporters.
The party’s governorship candidate, Mohammed Ndarani Mohammed, SAN, announced the appointment in a letter personally signed by him and made available to journalists in Minna on Friday.
Ndarani described Vatsa as an outspoken politician with strong grassroots connections, media experience and mobilisation skills. He said the former commissioner’s political background and communication abilities would strengthen the party’s campaign against the ruling APC in Niger State.
He also explained that assigning Vatsa both responsibilities was a deliberate decision based on his experience in public communication and grassroots politics. According to the SDP candidate, the party would rely on his ability to shape public opinion and mobilise supporters.
As campaign spokesperson, Vatsa will communicate the SDP’s five-point agenda to voters and serve as the official voice of the governorship campaign council.
In his role as Director of Contacts and Mobilisation, he will coordinate campaign activities across Niger State’s 25 local government areas, 247 political wards and 4,950 polling units.
His duties will also include engaging community leaders, traditional institutions and religious organisations, as well as organising grassroots campaigns across residential communities, markets and farming settlements.
