INEC Admits Officials Tampered with Voter Register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has admitted that some of its registration officers across Nigeria introduced irregularities into the national voter register, including the use of AI-generated photographs.

INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, Lawrence Bayode, disclosed this during an interview with ARISE TV on Friday. He explained that some registration officers had used their system login credentials to carry out activities that resulted in questionable entries in the register.

Bayode clarified that the misconduct involved only some officers across different states, rather than all registration personnel. He said the commission had identified different forms of irregularities, including the submission of AI-generated images and photographs that did not meet acceptable registration standards.

He added that INEC had begun reviewing and cleaning up the register to identify and address the affected entries.

The discovery of AI-generated photographs and multiple cases of duplicated records has raised concerns about the accuracy and reliability of the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The controversy followed the publication of a preliminary voter register online earlier this month, which attracted public criticism over suspected AI-generated photographs. INEC had responded by acknowledging the concerns and announcing an investigation into the reported irregularities.
