The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has backed Senator Magnus Abe’s call for former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi to reconsider his reported alignment with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, insisting that the South should retain the presidency until 2031.
Abe had challenged Amaechi to uphold his previously stated position on power rotation between the North and South, arguing that supporting Atiku would contradict the principle he had earlier advocated.
The two political leaders spoke on Tuesday at the official unveiling of Rivers State Rainbow Coalition candidates in Port Harcourt, where Wike, the coalition’s leader, also mobilised political stakeholders to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Abe maintained that the South should retain the presidency in 2027, arguing that political leaders must respect the rotation principle to promote fairness and stability in the country.
He recalled Amaechi’s previous position that presidential power should alternate between the North and South, saying his reported alignment with Atiku was inconsistent with that stance.
Abe called on Amaechi to resign as Atiku’s reported running mate, arguing that it was the South’s turn to produce the president and that Rivers State would stand by the North-South power-sharing arrangement.
He also urged Atiku to respect the principle of power rotation, while declaring his support for Tinubu and the Rainbow Coalition.
Wike, in his remarks, similarly criticised opposition figures over their political positions and urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nationwide to support Tinubu, regardless of their party affiliations.
He called on PDP members in Rivers, Kwara and Benue states to support the President’s re-election bid, extending the appeal to party members in Ondo, Ogun and other states.
The FCT minister argued that political differences should not prevent PDP members from backing Tinubu for a second term.
Wike also questioned Atiku’s political consistency and criticised Amaechi’s record as Rivers State governor between 2007 and 2015. He revisited promises made during Amaechi’s administration on malaria prevention and other development-related issues.
The minister further raised allegations concerning the management of funds during Amaechi’s tenure, referring to a judicial panel of inquiry and subsequent court proceedings. The allegations were not independently established at the event.
Wike maintained that the Rainbow Coalition was committed to bringing politicians from different parties together to support Tinubu and candidates endorsed by the alliance in Rivers State.
He also urged political stakeholders to avoid actions that could reignite tension in the state, calling for cooperation and peaceful political engagement.
The event was attended by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Abe and other political leaders and candidates from different parties operating under the coalition’s platform.
The unveiling was also presented as an opportunity to strengthen political reconciliation and build a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
