Court Martial Row Deepens Over Alleged Coup Trial

A General Court-Martial trying 36 Nigerian military personnel accused of plotting to overthrow the government has been thrown into controversy after defence lawyers challenged remarks made during early proceedings.

The officers are facing multiple charges linked to alleged conspiracy and mutiny across several locations in Nigeria.

Tension rose after the court’s presiding officer reportedly stated that a prima facie case existed against the defendants before the prosecution called any witness or presented evidence.

Defence lawyers argued that the comment suggested a pre-judged outcome and raised concerns about fairness in the trial.

The defence also questioned the court’s jurisdiction, insisting that the allegations amounted to treason which should be handled by a civilian federal court.

The tribunal, however, ruled that the charges fall under military law and confirmed its authority to continue hearing the case under the Armed Forces Act.

During proceedings, arguments intensified over whether the statement on a prima facie case should be removed from the record, but that request was later dropped after objections.

The case has been adjourned as defence lawyers continue to seek official records of the ruling while the trial moves forward.
