Ibadan Protesters Blocks Bullion Van Convoy Over Kidnappings

Protesters in Ibadan, Oyo State, clashed with a security convoy escorting a bullion van on Thursday during ongoing demonstrations over rising insecurity and school kidnappings.

The confrontation happened as residents continued their protest for the release of abducted pupils and teachers in the state. The incident quickly drew attention as tensions rose between demonstrators and armed operatives.

The protesters surrounded the lead security vehicle and demanded that the convoy turn back, accusing authorities of protecting money while failing to secure lives.

The bullion van later reversed and took another route, followed by its escort, while the crowd cheered the decision. Many of the protesters said government priorities were misplaced in the face of repeated abductions.

The demonstration is part of a wider protest movement that has lasted several days in Ibadan, led by civil groups and residents under the Take It Back Movement.

They have been calling for urgent action after armed attackers kidnapped pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area earlier in May 2026. The attack left the state in shock and triggered public anger.

Public frustration has grown following reports of killings linked to the kidnappers, including the death of a schoolteacher.

Labour unions have also joined the protest wave, with school shutdowns already affecting education across the state.

Despite government assurances of rescue efforts and new security deployments, protesters insist more urgent action is needed to bring the victims home.
